Do and When Megapixels Matter

The megapixel chasers will answer this unanimously YES just as quickly as the processor speed chasers will automatically upgrade to more mega/giga hertz, but what if we are just asking the wrong question.

It’s not DO megapixels matter because at some point we all agree that they do, so the question to ask is WHEN do megapixels matter?

If you’re simply shooting for the screen then I would say any modern day DSLR, mirrorless camera or even iPhone 12 Pro at 12MP is perfectly sufficient. What makes a difference here isn’t necessarily how many megapixels are in the photo because most modern HD screens (computer, laptop or televisions) can make 12MP photos look absolutely amazing and almost jump out of the screen phenomenal with 4k monitors.

Sure, your iPhone 12 will take photos that appear excellent on the screen but try to print them at 24x36 and you will be disappointed. At that megapixel, as the print size increases the overall quality of the photo will begin to pixelate and blur. But, what about the argument where distance away from the photo also contributes to the photos clarity. This is true, however, most people looking at picture hanging on the hall are not going to stand 40 feet away from it, but more on the distance of 12–36 inches on…
